In today’s episode, we’ll be chatting about using Upwork as a freelancer.

Should You Be A Generalist Or Specialist On Upwork?

When you are first getting started, you might be tempted to be a generalist on Upwork. I think it can work, especially if you are finding your niche. As time goes on, though, you should refine your profile and create something that stands out. When you have a specialist profile, you are more likely to be found by clients instead of always having to seek them out. Connecting with clients this way creates more revenue for your freelance business.

Create An SEO-Rich Profile

Once you decide that you want to create a specialist profile on Upwork, update your website.

  • Create a specific title.

  • Update your bio with keywords and a detailed description of your work.

  • Add lots of specific samples in your niche to your profile.

Create A Pitch That Gets A Response

Last but not least, create a pitch that gets a response. Upwork clients are flooded with pitches soon after they post a job. Most of these pitches are HORRIBLE. I know because I’ve used Upwork to hire someone before. Your pitches need to stand out and focus on the client.

Focus on the supplementary questions first!

Many freelancers work hard on the cover letter because they think that the supplementary questions don’t matter as much. Your clients see those questions first, even if you see them last. Focus your attention there, then fill in the gaps with your cover letter.

Focus on the client.

If you can, get to know the client before you send over a pitch. If they happen to leave their URL, go check out their website. If they share any defining features about themselves in the job description, use that to your advantage. You want to make it known that you’ve done your research, and you care about working with them.
