In today’s episode, we’ll be chatting about inbound marketing vs. cold pitching.

You Should Do Both

First, I feel like you should do both if you can. As much as I’d like to have a simple answer, I think that both cold pitching and inbound marketing bring value to a small freelance business. Start creating content to build passive leads, but also work on pitching people you’d like to work with.

What Can Cold Pitching Do For You?

Cold pitching is terrific because it can get you in front of companies you never dreamed up. For example, in my niche, Greenhouse was a company I’ve admired for a while. The truth is simple: Greenhouse was not looking for me. They may not have ever searched me out or connected with me if I didn’t take the initial step. Greenhouse has access to so many amazing writers that they may have never seen my profile. I reached out to Greenhouse for the first time in February of 2019. I was just a few months into officially declaring my HR tech niche. Even if my website was set up, and they were looking, there is no guarantee they would have found me on their own. Cold pitching allows you to stand out and work with companies you’ve only dreamed of.

What Can Inbound Marketing Do For You?

Now, let’s talk about what inbound marketing can do for you. The best part about inbound marketing is that it creates passive leads for your business. Instead of hitting the pavement, pitching, and applying, the leads come to you. When your leads come to you, it creates one of the most magical feelings. Here’s the thing about inbound leads, though, you can’t control which companies reach out. Through inbound marketing, I’ve been able to connect with a bunch of companies I’ve never heard of. Those leads haven’t been on my dream clients list. These clients have paid my rate, though, which makes them exciting to connect with.
